JOB SUMMARY:

 

The Coal Life Extension team is seeking to fill four (4) Engineer, Mechanical Engineering positions.

 

This role involves support for the development of preliminary, conceptual and detailed design related to Mechanical systems for the life extension of our coal power plants.


The Engineer, Mechanical Engineering is accountable to research, develop and implement tasks, methodologies and practices for the corporation. As a member of SaskPower’s management team, this position is responsible for assisting with and/or preparing technical studies, business cases, detailed designs, technical specifications, procurement evaluations and engineering drawings. This position will also prepare project plans, cost estimates, and schedules and provide contract management and project coordination services; ensuring alignment with departmental and corporate strategic goals and objectives.  

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

 

  • Preparing design documents, requirements, reports, technical specifications, calculations, and contract documents.
  • Provide review and acceptance of analysis, design, and specification prepared by consultants.
  • Working with design teams in a multidiscipline environment on projects collaboratively to produce design deliverables with the appropriate level of detail.
  • Learn and become familiar with assigned technical tasks, methodologies and practices
  • Provide assistance and prepare project plans and monitor project costs and schedules
  • Provide technical assistance for construction, commissioning and operations
  • Perform technical and economic analysis of alternative solutions for project business cases, and make recommendations on courses of action
  • Prepare project plans, monitor costs and schedules and initiate corrective action as appropriate
  • Provide direction for construction and commissioning projects and initiatives
  • Develop criteria, guidelines, standards and new practices based upon codes, technologies and methodologies
  • Provide direction to technologists, technicians, consultants and management staff
  • Provide direction to staff, consultants and other external technical agencies as required
  • Other related duties as assigned

 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, specializing in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Professional Engineering Designation - P. Eng.
  • A minimum of five (5) years experience in a combination of the following engineering tasks: planning facilities, providing design, construction, operations, commissioning, contract management and coordination of projects
  • Demonstrated experience in mechanical design and equipment specification working with industrial or power generation facilities/equipment (i.e. turbines, pumps, fans, material handling and conveying equipment, heat exchangers, piping, pressure vessels, HVAC systems, ducting and expansion joints, fire protection systems, etc.).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant design codes and standards related to mechanical engineering, equipment and systems (i.e. Saskatchewan Boiler & Pressure Vessel Act & Regulations, ASME B31.1, B31.3 and Section VIII, ASTM, API, CSA, NBIC, NFPA, ASHRAE, etc.).
  • Project management experience including the development of scopes of work, cost estimates, project schedules, procurement documents, bidding evaluations and contract negotiation.
  • Results oriented thinker, with the ability to manage and provide advice regarding complex and confidential issues with sensitivity and professionalism.
  • Ability to work and manage in a multi-discipline engineering environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with various departments and team members (internal and external)
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, facilitation, project management and decision making skills.
  • Ability to foster a culture focused on safety, innovation, and teamwork.
  • Ability to mentor, coach, and support Engineers-In-Training
  • Demonstrated skill in SaskPower's Competencies
  • Must have a continuing record of professional development
