This is a safety-sensitive position, the successful candidate(s) will be required to successfully complete mandatory pre-employment drug and alcohol testing to comply with SaskPower’s Fit for Duty Policy.
JOB SUMMARY:
The employee in this classification operates, maintains and controls hydroelectric plants and associated facilities in order to meet generation requirements.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
• Ensure the readiness of turbines, generators and associated equipment to meet peak load demands, spinning reserves and emergency operating requirements
• Monitor, operate, commission, monitor and troubleshoot turbines, generators and emissions control equipment, electrical apparatus, mechanical equipment and hydraulic machinery and take corrective action to maintain the security of the plant system and optimize plant availability and efficiency
• Convey operating information to the system control centre and perform generation and switching instructions
• Monitor, operate and troubleshoot potable water and sewage systems to meet provincial and federal regulations
• Participate in preventative and corrective maintenance programs
• Provide technical expertise and support to internal and external groups
• Issue or arrange for appropriate permits and perform switching, as authorized
• Interpret plans, drawing and specifications related to installation, modification, repair and operation of plant equipment
• Compile and maintain records detailing work performed, problems encountered, resources used, equipment malfunctions and/or corrective action taken and prepare various reports of information related to plant operation
• Adhere to applicable safety and environmental standards, regulations and corporate commitments
• Participate in continuous educational and professional development, both internal and external and driver’s licencing upgrades, as required by the position
• Maintain a clean and orderly work area
• Direct, coach, train, orient and work effectively with other staff
• Other related duties, as assigned
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
• Interprovincial Journeyperson Industrial Mechanic (Millwright) Certificate, or equivalent AND;
• SaskPower Hydro Station Operator Certificate, or equivalent, or the ability to attain such within 24 months of being appointed to the position AND;
• Possess the ability to make and implement sound decisions under emergent conditions
• Must be able to perform the physical requirements of the position
• Ability to cooperate and deal tactfully with others
• Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
• Valid Class 5 driver’s licence.
This position falls within the scope of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), Local 2067.
