This is a safety-sensitive position, the successful candidate(s) will be required to successfully complete mandatory pre-employment drug and alcohol testing to comply with SaskPower’s Fit for Duty Policy.

JOB SUMMARY:

 

SaskPower is looking for enthusiastic people interested in joining our team as Powerline Technician Apprentices. If you like working at heights, outdoors and challenging work, this may be the career that’s right for you.
The employee in this training classification will obtain an Interprovincial Journeyperson Powerline Technician Certificate upon successful completion of four apprenticeship years in accordance with the required training courses and experience.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

 

 As a Powerline Technician Apprentice, under supervision you would:


• Learn to construct, repair and maintain power pole lines and underground cable systems
• Learn basic climbing skills, safety procedures, tool/material use, and operation of “Powered Mobile Equipment” before moving on to more complex technical skills and challenging assignments
• Work outside in all types of weather – rain or shine
• Work at various heights
• Handle large, bulky, and often heavy materials or equipment

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

 

• Entrance requirements in accordance with the Provincial Apprenticeship and Trades Certification Standards
• All Candidates MUST refer to and be eligible to meet the Saskatchewan equivalent Entrance Requirements for Apprenticeship Training as per the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission

• Assessments, upgrades and/or equivalencies may be required; please refer to the SATCC or IQAS for further details
• Must be able to perform the physical requirements of the position
• Must be willing to relocate anywhere in the province
• Must be able to work in all types of weather
• Valid Class 5 driver’s licence
• Ability to cooperate and deal tactfully with others
• Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
 
Please reference the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship And Trade Certification Commission website for further information regarding entrance requirements. As per these requirements, the minimum entrance requirements for apprenticeship training which includes a Saskatchewan equivalent grade 12, a Canadian Language Benchmark Assessment level 6 (completed within the last 12 months), and/or be subject to passing an assessment monitored by the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission.
 
From the pool of successful candidates in this process, we will select individuals for our training crew.  After, the training crew employees will then report to one of our construction crews to begin our 4-year apprenticeship program.
 
Those unsuccessful in obtaining a position in the apprenticeship program may be considered for future labourer opportunities at SaskPower.

Candidates will tentatively start in October 2024.

 This position falls within the scope of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), Local 2067.

Candidates under consideration may be required to participate in an assessment process consisting of any/all of the following: interview, abilities test, case study and/or presentation.
